Starting a Medical Practice: Your Guide from Resident to Attending

If you’re reading this, you’re nearing the end of training, can finally see the light beyond exams, and you’re looking at jobs. Congrats! That’s a huge weight off your shoulders.
Already in practice? Know someone or have a new colleague about to join? This is for them.
Here’s the thing: you know the medicine. But how do you start and run a medical practice? (Confession – I definitely did not.)
You’re not just a physician – you’re also running a business
“I’m not a business.”
Actually, you probably are. If you’ll have an admin (aka an employee), rent an office, or incorporate at some point, you’re running a business. That’s just the reality of medical practice management today.
And if you’re like most of us, there was very little training in residency on how to start a medical practice. Maybe an odd mention here and there about practice management, but nothing substantial. Now you’ve got the medicine down, but you need to figure out how to actually start and run a practice.
The stress of not knowing is real
I’ve been there too. The stress of not knowing exactly what needs to be done, how to do it, and feeling real annoying asking soon-to-be colleagues too many questions.
That’s a big part of why I created DuplicateMeMD. To be a resource you can refer to as you go from resident or fellow starting a medical practice to fully functional, crushing-it attending.
It’s about more than just getting started
The goal isn’t just to get your practice going. It’s to have it run in the most effective way from day one so you can help prevent burnout, have the personal life you’ve worked so hard for and reach your financial goals.
PS – the common denominator to all of these things? How you manage your practice.
Your step-by-step guide starts now
Each week going forward there will be a post focused on the steps you need to start your practice. This will include experience from real physicians of different specialties and trusted specialists who make up the rest of your team (ex. accountants).
Not to sell you anything, but to share their expertise on the things you actually need to know.
Take the guesswork and stress out of starting a medical practice. Set up your practice from the beginning so that you can do what you’ve trained for and enjoy the life you’ve worked so incredibly hard for.
Sign up for the DuplicateMeMD weekly newsletter and have your step-by-step guide delivered straight to your inbox.
