Why practice management is the key to reaching ALL of your goals

Looking at the Venn diagram above are you thinking…”practice management? Really?”

It’s is not based off a peer-reviewed article or a systematic review. It’s not been debated at a conference (at least, not one I’ve been to). It’s certainly what I see when I look at my own life. And my friends’ and colleagues’ lives.

Practice management is the keystone tying everything together.

We get a lot of emails, hear a lot of talk and maybe even need to do (suffer?) through online modules about the 3 big rings – wellness-burnout, personal life and physician finance.

There are a lot of strategies and whole online communities dedicated to each of those big rings (looking at you physician finance groups). And these are great! They are critically important. We need them.

But what’s the common denominator that links the 3 rings for all of us? If you’re a physician, it’s your practice.

Specifically, if your practice management will help or hinder all 3 big rings.

The wild part is how you manage your practice is (almost) never discussed and most of us don’t even know to think about it.

Hear me out.

Overwhelmed, burnt out or dissatisfied with work? How you manage your practice can help.

Not engaged at home or feel you don’t have personal interests (and dare I say a hobby?!)? How you manage your practice can help.

Working towards FIRE, want to understand your finances better or have the goal of making the same income in less time? How you manage your practice can help.

It’s why when thinking about my goals for 2026 – professional, personal and financial – the main focus is how can I better my practice management so that I have the time, energy and persistent motivation to actually achieve them.

Still not sold? Put another way:

It doesn’t matter how much yoga or mindfulness you do, these can’t compete with a practice where your everyday is chaos, you’re constantly interrupted and you’re always being pulled towards burnout, you’re not going to feel “well”.

If your goal is to pick up your kids after school every day, on time and not frazzled – it isn’t going to happen if your schedule sets you up to be late , disheveled and frustrated before you even start your clinical day.

Want to increase your income or start a side gig? If you don’t have the mental bandwidth or energy to figure out how to do this, it isn’t going happen.

Great news: by focusing on one thing – practice management – all areas of your life can start to get better.

This may feel a little doom and gloom. But it shouldn’t! Because working on how you manage your practice will be a catalyst for improving all of these – your wellness, your personal life and reaching your financial goals.  This *might* be better than compound interest (don’t tell my accountant I said that).

The even better news is small changes will ripple. And those ripples will turn into big, meaningful differences – more time, more energy, possibly even more money.

Take a look at your 2026 goals. Or think about some ways you’d like your personal and professional lives to be better this year. Then get excited about the fact that making changes to only one area – practice management – will start improving all of them.

So here’s to a 2026 where reaching your goals is more feasible – because you can look at the one common denominator to achieve all of them.
